Play

December 1, 2024

In the grand game of life, the ultimate goal isn’t just to win - it’s to play wholeheartedly.

In a world often dominated by seriousness and routine, the concept of play is a powerful yet overlooked force. Cultural historian Johan Huizinga, in his work Homo Ludens, proposes the idea that play is not merely a childhood pastime; it’s a fundamental driver of human culture, creativity, and progress.

Yet as adults, we often set aside play for seriousness, responsibilities, entertainment, and consumption. We are no longer interested in the game of life and instead are captivated by the games we see on television and computers. Why do we abandon the impulse to climb trees, create games, or embrace the thrill of discovery?

Embracing Play in Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship is one of the purest forms of play. It’s a space where imagination meets strategy and curiosity fuels progress. Challenges become opportunities to innovate, and failures are simply part of the game. Entrepreneurship offers a path back to play - not as a diversion, but as a framework for living fully.

Your business itself should in itself be a form of play to you. Your business should ignite your curiosity, challenge your creativity, and inspire you to explore new possibilities. It should feel like an evolving game, where each day brings fresh puzzles to solve, strategies to test, and opportunities to innovate.

When your business becomes a playground for your mind, it ceases to be just work - it becomes a joyful pursuit of discovery and growth. It should be a space where you feel free to experiment, learn from mistakes, and celebrate small victories, all while building something meaningful.

If it doesn’t, it might be time to step back. Ask yourself: why not? A business that feels like a burden rather than a source of joy and excitement may need a shift in perspective - or even direction. Perhaps you’ve lost sight of what initially inspired you, or maybe the systems you’ve built are stifling rather than empowering. If any of these things resemble with you, I highly recommend reading Michael E. Gerber’s The E-Myth Revisited.

Embracing Play in Your Business

Once you’ve built a business which you experience as play, the next step is fostering a playful culture within your business. The E-Myth Revisited introduces a concept called the People Strategy, which transforms the workplace into a dynamic and purposeful game. By treating the workplace as a game, employees find purpose, test their skills, and engage meaningfully.

A playful business culture doesn’t just make work more enjoyable - it drives engagement, loyalty, and productivity. Employees approach their roles with energy and creativity, making your business thrive.

When play is built into your business, your employees’ work becomes more than a task - it becomes an opportunity for discovery, collaboration, growth, and fun.

Embracing Play in Your Life

Here’s the truth: it all starts with you. Your business, your team, and the culture you create are all extensions of your mindset and approach to life. If you want to cultivate a playful, innovative environment around you, you must first embody that spirit yourself.

When you reconnect with play in your life, you build the foundation for everything else. Think of it as recharging your creative and emotional energy, which then flows into your work and relationships.

By starting with yourself, you ensure that your business and relationships are built on a solid, authentic foundation. The energy and creativity you cultivate in your personal life will naturally extend to everything you touch.

By making play a priority, you’ll not only achieve more but enjoy the journey more. After all, in the grand game of life, the ultimate goal isn’t just to win - it’s to play wholeheartedly.
